PROPERTY Saint George Hotel and Hotel Saint George ADDRESS Near Trinity Church PROPRIETOR HEADLINE "Trinity Parish Now Has Full Possession of Hotel Saint George Property… Building to Be Removed and Furnishings Sold… Miami Concern Has Contract to Wreck Structure… Church People and Others Welcome Removal of Fire Menace." TEXT "Now in full possession of the Hotel Saint George property adjoining Trinity Episcopal Church, is Trinity Parish, final documents and deeds having been executed this weekend. "According to records at the Courthouse, in the office of Clerk Hiram Faver, transfer of the property from its former owner, Mrs T Betty Alland, to the Vestry of Trinity Parish, has been completed. Documentary stamps attached indicate that the transaction was for $25,000, the purchase price including the property, the large wooden hotel building and its furnishings. "Yesterday, the Trinity Vestry announced the building and its contents have been sold to Scott and Whittaker, of Miami, a firm of wreckers who razed Keeney Park, the Post Office Building in Jacksonville and other well-known structures. "It is expected that most of the furniture, as well as the lumber and other materials from the Hotel Saint George, will be sold on the grounds during the demolition. "Under the contract between Scott and Whittaker and Trinity Parish, the firm will tear down the structure and clear away the former hotel site, within a period of ninety days from the date of commencement. The grounds will be beautified as soon as possible after the raising of the building. Mr Scott, head of the firm purchasing the building and its contents with the understanding it will be raised include away within the time specified in the contract, is expected to arrive in Saint Augustine next Saturday, November 8th, to make arrangements to start demolishing the structure and disposing of the furniture and other contents. "Since Trinity Parish came into possession of the site adjoining the church property on the south, a watchmen has been on constant duty, day and night. The former owner and operator of the hotel, Mrs Alland, moved out on Wednesday, October 29th. For the present, at least, she expects to remain in Saint Augustine. A "As announced in mid-September when the initial settlement of the realty sale was made publicly, Trinity Parish acquired the site through popular subscription, both by members of the church and friends who regarded the transaction as a forward step in the church program and a civic project. Long regarded as a fire menace and as such, a distinct hazard to the historic Episcopal edifice and other buildings in the heart of the city, demolition of Hotel Saint George will remove forever that threat. The large structure so closely joins Trinity Church and its adjacent Parish House, that both air and light are cut off to a certain extent. With removal, attendants at church and those visiting the Parish House should see a marked improvement in lighting, as well as ventilation, it is pointed out. In addition, the large space remaining following the razing of the hotel building, will greatly increase the church grounds and make possible a program of horticultural beautification along desired by parishioners. "The property has a frontage of 189 feet on Saint George Street and extends from the church boundary on that street to Artillery Lane and eastward for a depth of 130 feet. The hotel is a three-story wooden structure and twice in recent months has been threatened by fire. About 55 years ago, it was a small and modest hotel operated by the Tylers, who sold the property to Mrs Mary Montgomery and WB Hustis of Saratoga Springs, NY. A quarter of a century later, they also operated it as a hotel and it was at that time it became known as the Saint George. It changed hands again, later, becoming the property of Frank Dudley and Mrs Dudley. At the death of the former, Mrs Dudley and Dr JA Hill managed the hotel for ten or twelve years, finally selling out to Mrs T Betty Alland, from whom Trinity Vestry recently purchased the site. "The Reverend Charles Frederick Schilling, rector of Trinity Church, and the Trinity vestryman: FJ Buchanan, Senior Warden; AA Jackson, Junior Warden; WH Barrett, secretary; Walter J Renfroe, treasurer; Dr JR Mosley, Frank F Harrold, Leo F Byrd, LJ Bailey, Edward R Joyce, George U Meserve, HB Symmes and Hardgrove Norris have been active for many weeks in instituting negotiations and completing the realty transaction which is expected to mean so much coming out only to Trinity parishioners and their friends, but the city as a whole." 1942.02.22 SAINT AUGUSTINE RECORD
PROPERTY Saint George Hotel and Hotel Saint George ADDRESS Near Trinity Church PROPRIETOR HEADLINE Old Hotel Is Almost Entirely Torn Down TEXT "The Saint George Hotel is over four-fifths demolished now and workmen engaged in the job of tearing down the oldest portion of the building near Trinity Church have come across planking fastened together with wooden pegs, a method used a good many years back when buildings were almost entirely constructed without nails. It is said this part of the structure was erected in 1830. "Material being salvaged from the hotel is rapidly being cleared away and soon nothing will remain of the Hotel Saint George. Workman said much of the solid heart pine removed from the structure will go into the building of homes here and elsewhere." |
