CONFEDERATE MONUMENT

A monument the Saint Augustine's Civil War dead was erected in 1872 on private property, because permission could not be obtained from Reconstruction era authorities to raise a monument to the Confederacy on public property. The original monument stood on the south side of Saint George Street, between Bridge and Saint Francis. It featured a column with a broken shaft, and marble plaques that were removed and used on the new monument. In 1879, city permission was granted for the construction of the Confederate monument that stood in the Plaza for 141 years, until it was recognized as offensive to the community and removed.
